How many people on the axiom

Remember me. Previous Share Flag Next. I'm new here, and pleased to find LJ places that share my enthusiasm for this extraordinary film. Here's a topic that got a recent confirmation from Pixar, much as HadesBabe got.

The Axiom is fairly big. And several days ago, I finally got some sort of confirmation from Pixar on my original guesses from last year. My estimation of the size of the Axiom , shown below: 4. So: Round numbers are still five kilometers or three miles long. The raw numbers don't do this ship justice. Take a look at this picture, to which I have scaled-in various other recognizable ships and objects.

For the most part, our own Sun is busily turning hydrogen into helium, but denser stars carry this process all the way up through iron. And supernovae push this boundary further; that brief blast creates the heavier elements, and serves to distribute all of it around. Outside of any ships like the Axiom and similar technologies, all of these heavier elements were made in stars. And a human-built fusion system would not be limited to iron; this is simply where the reaction in stars stops being self-sustaining.

If the Axiom needs heavier elements, it just puts more energy into the process. So all we need to provide not only energy but material needs -- at the rate of tons per second -- is to park near a plentiful source of hydrogen, such as a stellar nebula or even a protoplanetary nebula in the outskirts of a solar system, which is where the Axiom cruises.

And keep the engines running at low power while you cruise through the cloud, picking up hydrogen en masse perhaps using magnetic scoops. Notice that the Axiom is, indeed, parked in such a nebula? And despite having "no particular place to go" is actually cruising forward slowly, as if harvesting? No, there's no people-eating on board the Axiom , and there is no shortage of supplies of material.

Were they having to make a trip away from such clouds, they'd have to be more economical. And that abundant materials economy they have at the start of the movie is not good training for the return to Earth.

But it had suited them for a long time, producing a pleasant if unchallenging environment. Switching to "grow your own" will be just one of many changes they go through. There were frequent local clouds, but that is a part of our own Earth today. Space solar power will power the Earth by the end of this century; panels in space beaming power to ground receivers. This is our future, and it's technology that exists today.

I have stood in the power transmission beam which lit a bank of floodlights after passing through me. Practical fusion is far off; space solar power we can build and implement quickly.

And it will supply abundant electricity, anywhere we need it, cleanly raising the standard of living all over the globe. If you're worried about CO2, there's none involved. Let's do it! Tags: axiom. Register Don't have an account? Axiom Humans. Edit this page.
