Hedgehog when do that hibernate

Not sure if we have a nest as normally travel under the fence. I love my hedgehog visitors I could sit and watch them all night.

Mum has started to bring 1 goblet on her trips. Baby sits in middle of food whilst mum makes grunting sounds around the offspring is the grunting normal? Hi Jan Hedgehogs are one of the noisiest animals for their size! Snuffling, grunting and even screaming at times. The police have been called out more than once, only to find an amorous hedgehog at the scene rather than some terrible offence being committed!

I have up to three hedghogs in my garden. I have been feeding them on hedghog food for a few months now. The first one arrives at dusk, and starts feeding. The second arrives about an hour later, stays for about an hour and disappears. By using a wildlife camera I can follow them as they feed.

Just occasionally all three are present and feeding for a few minutes. They do not feed constantly, but pop out of a hedge, feed, and return to the hedge. Interestingly the two i see regularly use a different part of the hedge. My garden is also invaded by cats at various times of the night, but I rarely see hadghogs and cats at the same time. Would cats eat baby hoglets? Living near the coast seagulls have started to eat any residual food in the mornings.

Hi Gandad How lovely to have and see three regular hedgehogs visiting. Cats are not a danger to hedgehogs generally. A well fed cat won't risk a spike on the nose from an angry mother hedgehog! The babies spines appear shortly after birth and they are well protected before they leave the nest. Hi, we have a hedgehog that has moved in to a space inside a metal box in our garage.

Hi Anne How exciting to have a hedgehog nesting in your garden! Don't worry about the heat, the mother will move her litter to a cooler location if needed. This is also dependent on the weather as sudden drops or increases in temperature may rouse a hibernating hedgehog. If the hedgehog has built their nest in an unsafe place then call the British Hedgehog Preservation Society BHPS and they will give you guidance on what to do next. Building a nest is hard work after all!

Hedgehogs like to hibernate snuggled up under log piles or under piles of dry leaves. You can make your garden more hibernation friendly by letting things get a tad on the messy side. Letting your garden get a bit wild will help make conditions ideal for all different kinds of wildlife, not just hedgehogs. You never know who might be tucked up in the greenery! We are delighted to have these visitors in our garden and want to do everything we can to keep them happy.

King regards Ann and Hugh. Thank you for your advice. We have bought a hog house from home and roost. It has a door with latch where we can give food and water. The roof does come off but also has latches to keep closed. When should we close push in this bridge to stop predators entering? It looked like a good idea to have one when I bought it!!!

Carolyn Beswick. Best of Luck with hibernation! I have a similar question — I have an about to hibernate hedgehog in the corner of the poly tunnel! I am happy for others to contradict me on this, but I think if you leave a little dry food and some fresh water in the polytunnel, and dont plan to be in there too much over the winter, it could be quite a good place for him to hibernate. If on the other hand you are going to be in there a lot and likely to disturb him, then you will need to move him.

Very gently, taking as much nest as possible with you, and ideally putting him in a hedgehog house in a quiet corner. Thanks for this information. Our resident hedgehog did not take the food last night. I checked both hog houses in our garden sorry! It could just be that one of your neighbours left out an especially good feed last night.

But as you say, resist the urge to rummage through the hedgehog house at all costs! Good Luck Clare. Dear Clare We are fortunate to have a number of hedgehogs feeding in our garden.

A mixture of adults and urchins. On one night we had five feeding at the same time. I have a couple of questions for you. We have a hedgehog home in a brick shed. Is it likely that more than one hedgehog will nest in the same box? I have built two more hedgehog house this week — on a similar design.

Is it best to place them elsewhere in the garden with some distance between them? Or close together? I was thinking that if all three boxes were in the brick shed there would be additional protection from the elements.

We have a wooden shed, the underside of which could be used; or a decking area where we think a sow had a litter earlier this summer.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you Mark. You have been busy! Though occasionally young hogs from the same litter born this year may do this. They are solitary creatures in general and like their space. Best of luck. Hi, thanks for the article.

I have a hedgehog now nesting in my Compost bin, in the summer, a female had a litter in there… Think I can safely say my Compost bin has been hijacked! Is this true? I am worried about leaving the ithe hedgehog house out if they are not fit for purpose, in case another hog wants to nest? Any advice would be appreciated Christine. They do love a compost bin! Depending on how far north you are I would doubt if they are hibernating quite yet. We are having a very mild autumn and the night time temperature usually needs to be consistently below 5c for hibernation to start.

The problem with the gloo hedgehog houses is that there can be sharp bits of the metal frame, which could cut the hog, the entrance tunnels tend to be too short to effectively keep you predators and they have no base, so can easily be overturned by predators. You can fix all of these by taping over sharp ends, placing a brick a few inches in front of the entrance to act a a baffle and using tent pegs to fix the gloo to the ground. But all in all it might be easier to just get a new one!

Best of luck! Have I scared them off? We have 2 spaniels who are hedgehog friendly but I cant put cat food down as they will eat it — Ive placed some hedgehog food slightly inside the house in the hope it would entice them in.. Or just leave it well alone until next year when they may actually realise they have a hedgehog pad fit for a prince right in front of them?!

But they are very unlikely to nest in your hedgehog house if you have food in it. How about putting the food out after you bring the dogs in for the night? Hi Clare We have two houses with tunnels next to each other in the garden. We also have two feeding stations nearby. We have five hogs across the two houses.

But they seem to happily come out of one and go next door. We have also had four all feeding at the same time. What to feed your hedgehog before hibernation? Semi-Moist Hedgehog Food.
