In other words, you get one shot to stop an American Express chargeback, so make it count. American Express has its own set of chargeback reason codes, and they refer to situations that correspond to Visa and Mastercard reason codes you may already be acquainted with.
Merchants should review these codes, track which ones they receive, and respond to inquiries and chargebacks with the appropriate supporting evidence relevant to each code. Remember, if you have already issued a refund or credit over a transaction in dispute, proof that you did so may be all the evidence you need to provide. American Express chargebacks may be handled differently than Visa or Mastercard chargebacks, but they happen for the same reasons.

Another potential policy fix would be to lower interchange fees, which the Durbin Amendment , part of the Dodd-Frank bill, did for debit card transactions. If swipe fees for credit cards were capped, rewards would almost certainly diminish, too.
But so would the regressive nature of credit card spending. During the pandemic, people without bank accounts often wound up being charged to cash their stimulus checks , losing out on money they were entitled to. And so they wind up losing money — they turn to expensive payday lenders that charge exorbitant interest rates and risk getting pulled into debt traps or resort to financial products that charge them more specifically because they have less.

An Amex representative in this piece of writing using a word such as "discount rate" confuses the proper words of "merchant fees" to talk about how much money Amex takes away from a business on a card transaction.
Amex wasn't part of it. Things worked well. Moneris would deposit days after taking payment from a credit card. A year later, Amex called and wanted me to accept their card.
Moneris equipment would be used to process a transaction and the fee was to be higher. The Amex rep also said up to 30 days for payments to be transferred which raised an eyebrow. I waited a month before calling about where my money went before something was done. Other small business people who accepted it in my group of self employed people also reported errors in the Amex process.
