The new county established its seat in the settlement of Bullsboro in , with Walter Colquitt as the first superior-court judge. Because no clearly defined roads led to the settlement, a new site was located roughly two miles west. Newnan ultimately became the main economic center for the county, although smaller communities were scattered throughout the region.
By the county had grown to almost 15, people, evenly divided between whites and Blacks, with plantations and farms the main means of income. The Civil War brought changes to Coweta County. Eventually Newnan would have seven hospitals and treat more than 10, soldiers from both sides. Before the war one in four county white farmers had land and enslaved workers. After the war the southern economy changed. The textile industry found its way to the South and Coweta County.
In the Willcoxon Manufacturing Company was the first cotton plant built in the county. By the early s more cotton factories had opened. Textile mills continued to be built in the county. Atlanta has a rich diversity of socioeconomic backgrounds, and is full of northerners drawn by the booming economy, pleasant climate, activities, and cultural diversity.
The commercial downtown is modern, but not as impressive as most large American cities. But the real story is suburban growth: the city has spread primarily to the north and northeast into the wooded areas of Dekalb, Cobb and Cherokee counties, where the most desirable residential neighborhoods are found.
The regions to the east and south are more industrial, while the west is a mix. The sprawl is going still further north, beyond Marietta to Kennesaw, beyond Roswell to the more upscale Alpharetta, and so forth. Most people commute to somewhere along the Perimeter, not downtown.
The area has some of the highest quality residential properties anywhere per dollar spent, particularly for a city of this size. Nice family-style homes are affordable thanks to inexpensive labor, materials, and business costs. Generous, well-built houses on attractive wooded lots are the rule, not the exception. The area looks more attractive than most, but some areas are starting to get crowded.
There is plenty to do in Atlanta and surrounding areas, with an abundance of rich cultural amenities and nightlife; the list is too long to share here.
Atlanta is a particularly strong choice for families and career-minded middle class seeking good single-family housing in a lively big-city environment. But those residents must increasingly be willing to tolerate the side effects of rapid growth. Physically, Atlanta is located in a transition zone between forested hills to the north and more level agricultural areas to the south. Nearby mountains and distant water moderate the climate somewhat resulting in a mix of subtropical and continental types.
